The Spring Racing Carnival is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated event on Australian calendars. Race-goers flock from all over Australia, (and globally), to attend Flemington's horse racing over four days, with a little over 275,000 people attending last year's races.
Spring Racing has always been an interest of mine. As a child, I remember watching Sky Racing with my Nan. More recently, my internal dial been pointed towards the glitz and glamour of the racing season.
Spring Racing is filled with race-goers dressed in polished attire, gathered in one place for two reasons: to [somewhat] watch the horse racing, and to drink what feels like bottomless champagne! Each season feels as if fashion forwardness is first out of the starting gate.
Looking back, some of the key trends were aggressive patterns, mix and match suiting, and a large focus on accessories (particularly umbrellas). For years, Mr Porter has been setting the standards in retail by offering a personalised experience, along with a full suite of leading brands.
For last year's special day, it only seemed right to work with Mr Porter to curate an outfit for Melbourne Cup, aka the 'Race That Stops The Nation'. Typically, Melbourne Cup day promotes flair, which translates to me as boldness. In putting an outfit together I wanted to express boldness, but at the same time pay homage to the prestige associated with Melbourne Cup for a more classical feel.
Yours truly,
JR
